Seventh Grade
Seventh Graders dive deeper into a challenging curriculum focused on deeper skill acquisition, greater independence and self-regulation, and exhibiting leadership within the school community.
Core Courses
ENGLISH | The ELA curriculum focuses on deepening students’ literacy through identifying themes and leading class discussions. In 7th grade, students read books like Night by Elie Wiesel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Transferable close reading skills are built into whole class novel instruction.
SOCIAL STUDIES | In 7th grade, students dive into ancient civilizations. Students study primary sources to understand the origins of civilization. The curriculum spans from ancient Egypt and Kush, ancient Greece and Rome, to ancient African civilizations. Students learn to use sources to paint a picture of a time long ago.
SCIENCE | Our Science curriculum is inquiry based and involves many hands-on activities and discoveries. Seventh grade is all about Physical Science. They study non-living systems like matter, thermal energy, chemical reactions, energy and electricity.
MATH | GO-NYC uses Illustrative Math, a curriculum that emphasizes problem-solving over algorithmic memorization. Seventh grade takes many of the concepts and units of 6th grade a step further. In Seventh Grade more negative numbers are added into the mix, as well as multiple variables. There is again a large emphasis on rations and proportions. The Algebra unit goes beyond expressions and equations and focuses on inequalities.
